Blended Ink Plaid Birthday Card

My dad’s birthday was this week. I STRUGGLE with cards for him, I think I have mentioned before. His interests do not lie in the collection of what the crafting companies sell as masculine themed supplies. Yes, he loves sports…there are not new sport items for every holiday I need.

Think Think.

He is a colorful plaid sport shirt kind of guy. Can I make a bright plaid background?

My first try was watercolor…seems I can paint pretty straight, but I do not have good brush control (I flatten a round brush out as I go). And, as I went to do the stripes in the opposite direction, I didn’t wait for my paper to dry. Patience is NOT one of my virtues.  (Only when I am baking is patience in my toolbox!)

Hmmm…

Back to Think Think.

I did not have a large striped stencil (guess what?? 2 arrived today – gotta love online shopping!). I did have a small (3 x 4 inches) striped stencil.

I used Distress Oxide Ink – Salty Ocean in one direction, Peacock Feathers in the other. I started with a half sheet of cardstock (5.5 x 8.5 inches), so I had at least 6 iterations of “tape stencil down, blend ink, remove stencil, wash stencil” for each color. I am happy with the result.

Thanks for stopping by!

Floral Wreath Birthday Card

I watched a Jennifer McGuire video last week, about using the new gina k. Designs Wreath Builder Stamps & Templates – here is the video from YouTube:

I immediately cyber scampered over to the gina k. Designs store, to see if the templates were available as a stand alone purchase. Not at this time (I did not ask gina k. if the stencils would ever be a standalone product, and I do not have a crystal ball to read the future.). I didn’t really have the budget available to purchase the stamp set and template package.

Think think. Think think.

I made my own template, using lightweight cardstock, acetate (Office Depot transparency sheet), double sided tape, and a Spellbinders rectangle die (cut twice).

Here is my first card using the handmade template with my MISTI. (the circle under the greeting is the blank center of the wreath)

I cut my cardstock to be 5.5 inches (leaving myself the option to keep it as a square, or to trim it down to make a regular A2 card. The A2 option won because I made a small mistake, and that size allowed me to trim off the mistake.

Supplies: Stamps – Essentials by Ellen, paper – Neenah Classic Crest Solar White, Stampin’ Up! Basic Black, inks – Tim Holtz/Ranger Distress Ink Wilted Violet, Tim Holtz/Ranger Distress Oxide ink Peacock Feathers, Picked Raspberry, Salty Ocean, VersaFine Onyx Black, dies – Spellbinders, hotfix pearls – Swarovski Cabochon Jet, embossing powder – Stampin’ Up! Sterling Silver.

Viking Valentine Card

Offspring3 found this stamp for my birthday…with one of the neighbor’s kids in mind. The oldest neighbor kiddo is 5, and she is a chatterbox. She has been a viking the past 2 Halloweens, and she even gets her Daddy to dress up, too.

I made dots with my Copic markers for the ground – I was thinking rocky, dirty terrain, with a little ice/snow mixed in.

Supplies: Stamp – Avery Elle, paper – Neenah Classic Crest Solar White, Poptone Razzle Berry, Stampin’ Up! Red Glitter, inks – Copic B0000, C00, C1, C3, C5, C7, , E00, E15, E23, E41, E53, E57, N4, N7, W3, W7, T3, Tim Holtz/Ranger Distress Inks Hickory Smoke, Tumbled Glass, VersaFine Onyx Black, dies – Lawn Fawn (stitched rectangle), Spellbinders (hearts), stencil – Inky Antics, embossing powder – Filigree Fine Art Powder clear, twine – MarkerPop.
